Understanding the Power Dynamics
The best way to understand the power dynamics in a relationship is to create a contract. A contract outlines expectations, what happens if one of you breaks the rules, and each person’s safe words. Safe words are important in any type of sexual relationship, but they’re even more important in BDSM. They’re there to let your partner know when things are getting too intense and they need to stop. You’ll also want to establish who tops and who bottoms. In a BDSM relationship, one person will be in charge of administering the punishment or pain, while the other person receives it. There are different types of BDSM relationships. There’s the top-bottom relationship, the master-slave relationship, and the dominant-submissive relationship.
